The footage shows several LIVE FROGS suspended and exposed to intense sunlight and extreme heat, enduring prolonged suffering and apparently being left to die slowly. The video is currently being circulated as originating from China. Video: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/14tcWBaV6fT/?mibextid=wwXIfr As the exact location where the video was recorded and its original source have not yet been independently confirmed, we formally call upon the competent Chinese authorities, animal protection organisations and media to: IMMEDIATELY INVESTIGATE AND VERIFY THE ORIGIN OF THE VIDEO, THE LOCATION WHERE IT WAS RECORDED AND THOSE RESPONSIBLE. If the footage is authentic and was indeed recorded in China, this treatment of living animals is completely unacceptable. No commercial practice, food tradition or economic activity can justify deliberately subjecting sentient living beings to prolonged, severe and entirely avoidable suffering. We therefore urgently request: * identification of the exact location where the video was recorded; * verification of the circumstances shown in the footage; * immediate intervention to stop this practice if it is still occurring; * investigation of the individuals, operators or businesses involved; * concrete measures to prevent animals from being subjected to prolonged and unnecessary suffering during capture, transport, handling, sale or killing; * a public response from the competent authorities regarding the outcome of the investigation and the measures taken; * the development of stronger and comprehensive anti-cruelty legislation in China, clearly regulating and sanctioning deliberate cruelty to animals regardless of species. This is not an attack on the Chinese people. Many Chinese citizens and animal protection organisations are themselves fighting animal cruelty and have long been calling for stronger legal protection for animals. Precisely for this reason, these images cannot simply be ignored. The way a society treats animals is increasingly a matter of international concern and involves ethics, public responsibility and the international reputation of countries and the industries concerned. We urge the competent authorities to investigate this footage immediately, establish the facts and take concrete and effective action wherever unlawful conduct or cruelty to animals is identified. Silence cannot be the response to deliberately inflicted suffering.
